Do You Make These Article Marketing Mistakes?

There are effective and ineffective ways to conduct article marketing. Many new article marketers make the same mistake over and over again. If you are considering article marketing you should at least think about these avoidable mistakes and try to steer clear of them before you start:

  1. Write articles that are too long - A good article must be short enough that publishers will want to share it with their readers. How short is that? Probably no more than 800 words. Ideally, your articles should be 400-700 words and no more.
  2. Write articles that are too short - Many article directories will not take your articles if they are less then 300 words or 250 words. Your articles need to be at least 300 words in length.
  3. Write titles that do not draw attention - Your article title will be the first thing that readers will see in many cases. You’ve got to get their attention in the article title. Otherwise, the article may never get read.
  4. Put too many links in their author bio - The purpose for your author resource box is to get readers to click a link and visit your website. The resource box needs to be focused to drive traffic to one page. Too many links can discourage the click through and this kills many would-be article marketers right off the bat.
  5. Do not write enough articles - Many article marketers do not produce enough articles. They’ll write 10 articles and distribute those 10 to one directory then wait. Or they’ll write one per month and hope for a big cash pay load. To be successful in article marketing you’ve got to produce at least one article per day. Many article marketers write several articles in one day.
  6. Do not properly optimize their articles - Your articles need to be properly optimized. Publishers seek well-optimized content for their newsletters and websites. If you don’t write well-optimized articles then they will not be published.

Are you making these mistakes in article marketing? If so, perhaps you should think about your goals and start writing articles that will be more effective in your marketing plan.

Do You Have A Squeeze Page?

By allen on April 28th, 2008

When it comes to article marketing, successful Internet marketers set up a squeeze page, also called a landing page. Your squeeze page need not be super-detailed. It can be a simple page that is set up to take in opt-ins for your newsletter or e-zine. But it doesn’t have to be that either. It DOES need to be focused on one goal. Goals for a squeeze page can include:

  • Newsletter or e-zine opt-ins
  • Sale of a particular product
  • Free downloads
  • Sign up for an e-course
  • Listen to a podcast or watch a video
  • Any specific action you want your visitor to take

Your squeeze page should be focused on one goal. What action do you want your visitor to take? Focus your squeeze page on that one action and use article marketing to drive traffic to that squeeze page. And don’t have any exit links on that page. Make sure that all the content on that page is written to drive your visitor to the desired course of action. If you do that then you’ll find that you’ll be a lot more successful at article marketing.

Article Marketing: Keeping Your Eye On The Prize

Many new article marketers start off writing articles then quickly peter out. They go into it with high hopes and big expectations only to be let down in the end. What went wrong? Usually it is unreasonable expectations that get the best of them.

If you expect article marketing to produce immediate results then you are in for a shock. There is a very good chance that you won’t see any results for several weeks, maybe even months. An article a week will yield you only 52 articles at the end of a year. That’s just a start for some article marketers. It could be a year or two before you see any real measurable results at that rate. It is better, if you can, to write and submit one article per day to at least one article directory. Then, at the end of that year you’ll have 365 articles in distribution. That’s 7 times the previous number, but the results could be far more than 7 times the return. Think exponentially.

Article marketing is not about getting published in the article directory. It’s about more than one website. It’s about multiple publications over time.

Every time a new e-zine publisher or webmaster picks up your article to publish on their site you are tapping into a whole new well of traffic and building additional streams of link popularity. That’s why the more articles you can produce the better. But you also need to ensure that your articles have a certain level of quality. Articles that lack quality won’t get published beyond the article directory and that won’t help you. You are aiming for publishers to pick up your articles and deliver you fresh streams of traffic.

Imagine this: One article in one directory every day for a year. Each article is picked up by one publisher per week. At the end of a year you will have thousands of backlinks and new sources of traffic for your website. Thousands! Tens of thousands, even. That certainly sounds better than 52, doesn’t it?

Well, you don’t have to take my word for it. When it comes to article marketing, doing it is so much more rewarding than talking about. So why not go for the prize? Start now.

Article Marketing On A Budget

Article marketing is one of the most powerful methods of marketing. You can get great traffic long term for little cost. If you do it yourself then the cost is absolutely free. But what does it mean to do it yourself?

Do-it-yourself article marketing is when you write the article and submit it to directories yourself. It can be very time consuming to do this. Should you do it?

If you have a limited budget then you might find it difficult to pay someone to write and submit your articles for you. On the other hand, if you are busy building your business then you might find it hard to spend the time on this necessary activity. What should you do?

I recommend starting slow. Write one article per week and submit it to one or two directories. Do this for a couple of months and see what kind of results you get. Then step it up a bit. Try writing two articles per week, or submit one to five directories instead of two. After another couple of months you’ll want to step it up again. During this time you should be tracking your results. Are you getting traffic from your articles? Are your articles getting picked up by e-zine publishers and webmasters? If not, you need to find out why and make some changes to the way that you are writing the articles.

When your DIY article marketing starts paying off, take the income that you’ve gained from your efforts and put it toward outsourcing. Let’s say you sold one of your cool $99 widgets. Take the $99 and pay a writer to write some articles then you distribute them to your directories. As your income increases you can start writing more articles. You’ll also be busier fulfilling orders and taking care of business so you’ll have less time for the article writing and marketing. As your income goes up and you spend more time running the business, outsource more and more of the writing and submission process. Eventually you’ll be able to pay someone to write an article a day and submit that article to several directories. That is the ideal.

Article Marketing For Beginners

I don’t see too many articles on article marketing at Marketing Pilgrim. That’s why I was surprised to see this one today.

I like the article because it is amazingly accurate. It’s refreshing to see an article marketer who really understands the art of marketing by articles. When I see someone mention that article marketing can produce hundreds or thousands of links beyond the links you get from the article directories themselves, that’s when I know they know what they’re talking about. Because that is the essence of article marketing. It’s about driving traffic and building links. When done right, you can achieve both goals over time.

Never stop writing articles for marketing purposes. As you add new pages to your website or blog, write an article about it to submit to the article directory of your choice.

This is just one example of great advice Shannon Lilly gives in his article on article marketing at Marketing Pilgrim. That’s why I read their blog.

Do You Understand Article Marketing?
Ken Nobo Doesn’t.

I found this lousy article online recently:

I’m going to show you one wicked article marketing strategy to give you an edge over your competition. Everybody wants to be in a front page of Google and I’m going to show you exactly how to do it.

First-year article needs to be in a high ranking webpage. For example if your are article marketing on EzineArticles then you are in the right place because Google loves EzineArticles and the article will be ranked on the first or second page of Google, even for competitive keywords.

Is this guy serious? You’ll be ranked on the first or second page of Google just for submitting an article to EzineArticles? You mean, it’s that simple? Oh, and even better, even if you use competitive keywords. Wow, what a bargain.

Taylor Tip: Your first clue that you’ve landed a whale of a sheister - he promises you first page listings on Google. Second clue, he sweetens the pot by telling you something stupid like “even if you use competitive keywords.” I’m sorry, but there’s no guarantee that you’ll end up on the first page of Google, or any other search engine, if you do anything - even if you use competitive keywords.

Just for giggles, I Googled this articles title, “Article Marketing Strategy - How To Have Your Article Place On The First Page Of Google,” and how funny it is that it’s not on the first page of Google. I scrolled on down to the second page. Guess what, it wasn’t there either. So I thought I should Google the author’s name - Ken Nobo. So I did. Nope. No first or second page listings for this article. Trust him now?

Probably the most important thing is Keyword selection in your article title. What you want to do is use Google’s adwords Keywords external tool. (google it, it’s free). That tool of gives you an idea of what people type in Google to find out what they want.

This is actually a good suggestion. Google AdWords’ keywords tool is a great tool, and it’s free. And you should select keywords that are popular and profitable. Given, right?

Plus it shows the monthly search volume So you have idea on how popular the key word is.

For example, let say the keyword is “Article marketing strategy”. Then you would want to place Doles keywords in your headline.

Uhm, “Doles?” Incoherent sentence. If you know what he’s saying there, kudos to you. I do article marketing and I couldn’t figure it out. Perhaps you should use a ghostwriter who can make sense of his sentences.

For example: “Top-five article marketing strategy, tips”. You would also want to sprinkled the keywords a couple of times in the body of your article. So Google thinks that it is relevant to the person’s search inquiry.

“So Google thinks …?” How about so that it is relevant. And “a couple” of keywords in your article isn’t going to cut it. Maybe it will for a 300-400 word article. But if your article is a 700 word article then you probably want it 5-7 times. I use this general rule of thumb: Once in the first sentence of the story, once in the last sentence of the story, and once per paragraph on average.

When somebody is using article marketing and they rank first place on Google because they use the proper keywords on the title. And they get rich as a result, because people usually click on the first and second and third link when they type something in Google.

Taylor Tip: A sure sign of a sheister is he promises you riches. No one gets rich because they had one article appear on the first page of Google. Article marketing must be done on a consistent basis over time. People who make a lot of money doing article marketing get consistent results form article marketing over a period of time. Hey, who are going to believe, me or a guy that writes in sentence fragments?

So used his article marketing strategy to your advantage. And you’ll be glad that you did because it works. However note that not all the time you will be ranked first place on Google but you can pretty be darn close to it.

Nice disclaimer there at the end. It works, but you won’t rank first in Google every time. The truth is, you don’t have to rank first at all. In fact, you don’t even have to appear on the first two pages of Google for your article. The goal of article marketing isn’t to rank in Google. The goal is to broaden your marketing by writing articles that position you as an expert in your industry and that get other webmasters and e-zine publishers excited about you. They will then publish your articles in their publications and you will get the traffic from their websites and e-zines. It helps if you understand article marketing in the first place.

Do Keyword Research Before Writing Articles

By allen on April 11th, 2008
Posted in Article Marketing, Article Writing | 1 Comment »

I’m amazed at how many article marketers do not do any keyword research before they start writing. They’ll pick a topic and just start writing with no thought as to what people are searching for. You can’t be successful with article marketing if you do not do this.

Keyword research not only keeps you focused on a topic that people are interested in, but it tells you which words are best for use in the articles you want to write. For instance, if you are a plumber and you want to write about leaky faucets it might help you to know that people use the keyword “kitchen sink” a lot. If you know that “kitchen sink” is used more often than “leaky faucets” then you can write your article around the keyword “kitchen sink” and still discuss the topic of leaky faucets. You will be much more effective that way.

The best article marketers do their keyword research before they start writing. They identify their top keywords before ever writing that first word. Then they write each article around a specific keyword related to their niche. If you do your keyword research first then you can write all of your articles at the same time and you will be much more effective in your marketing efforts.

Why Article Titles Are Important

By allen on April 9th, 2008
Posted in Article Writing | No Comments »

When you write your article titles do you put a lot of care and attention to crafting the perfect title? If not, you should.

There are plenty of reasons why you should take extra pains to ensure your article titles are the best they can be. Here are two reasons right here:

(Source) The heading or title of your article must consist of the keywords; most of them or all of them. The benefit from this is that when publishers are searching for keyword related articles, the search engines look for these keywords, and if the title is compelling enough and body content informative, your article has an excellent chance of being republished.

Did you get those two reasons? I’ll restate them:

  1. People read the article based on the title
  2. Search engines rank the article based on the title

That’s right, your articles will rank in the search engines based on how well you write your title. Keywords are very important. You need your keyword in the title one time - not twice. Once. And it should be included in the first five words of the title. After that, if you have a secondary keyword then slip that in near the end of your article title.

Beyond being highly optimized, your article titles should also do these things well:

  1. Pique the curiosity of the reader.
  2. Tell precisely what the article is about - your readers will not want to read your article only to find that the title was misleading. That’s very annoying and you will lose their trust.
  3. Be short.
  4. Use an action verb.

You are always writing for two audiences, whether writing articles, blogs, headlines, website content, or anything else. Your two audiences are always your human reader and the search engines. You should endeavor to make them both happy. Start with that goal in the first word of your article title.

Free Marketing Should Come Before Paid Clicks

By allen on April 7th, 2008

I believe that when you are entering a new market you should start out with article marketing. If you have to write good articles about a topic or subject, you have to do research. The research you do will help you find pay per click ad space that is empty and you will be the only one advertising in that space.

It always blows my mind the number of webmasters who start a website and immediately go to pay-per-click advertising or other paid advertising methods before exhausting the free marketing alternatives available to them. It’s not that I have anything against pay-per-click. I don’t. I just believe in getting for free everything you can before paying good money out of the pocket.

Article marketing works. That’s why people use it. And there are so many free methods of marketing online that it just doesn’t make sense to throw money out the door on PPC until you’ve exhausted them. Here are some free online marketing methods you should use before resorting to pay-per-click:

  • Article Marketing
  • Blogging
  • Social Bookmarking
  • Podcasting
  • Video Marketing
  • SEO
  • Forum Posting

Naturally, not every one of these methods are for everyone, but everyone can pick out two or three of these methods to employ before spending money on PPC. You should at the very least incorporate good SEO, article marketing, and blogging into your marketing strategy before you spend a dime on PPC. After you’ve been successful in these free marketing methods then you can go full force with your pay-per-click marketing. When you do start paying for clicks, your effectiveness will be a lot greater as a result of your success with the free marketing methods.

Why Article Marketing Is Time Consuming

By allen on April 4th, 2008
Posted in Article Marketing | 1 Comment »

I found this snippet in an article at a popular article directory:

However, if you are lazy I do not suggest that you try this strategy. It takes time and you need to have hundreds or thousands of articles out there to get it to work properly. This is the main reason that many people do not take advantage of this as it is far too time consuming.

Article Marketing is time consuming. That’s why a lot of people don’t do it. But if you saw the profits that came from your efforts then you’d either do it yourself despite the time it takes or pay someone to handle the details for you.

This author is correct. It does take a lot of articles. That’s why you must be consistent and persistent in sending out articles. You can’t just do it once or twice and expect windfall results. Too many new webmasters try to take the easy way out and just send out five or ten articles to one article directory and think they are doing article marketing. That’s not the right way to do it. If you want real results from your article marketing efforts then you need to consistently send out articles to at least a half a dozen article directories (and I like to follow up with a mass submission to iSnare).
