Become An Expert In Your Field

This is still one of the most ignored aspects of article marketing. Branding yourself as an expert in your field or on your topic is very important and Article Marketing is the best way you can achieve that.

If people read your articles and they are well-written, interesting, and informative they are three times more likely to do business with you.

Keyword-stuffed articles that are not worth reading are what most people put out as article marketing. Believing that articles stuffed with keywords will get them better search engine rankings is missing the point of article marketing entirely.

What good is a search engine listing that leads to an article that is worthless from the reader’s standpoint? You think that if they find you with that listing, then read that garbage article is going to give you a good reputation or bring you their business? If you think it will, you are dead wrong.

A well-written article that is optimized correctly can get better search engine listings than spammy overstuffed keyword articles. When the reader does find the article, they will also be impressed with your knowledge on the topic and they are likely to do business with you.

People want quality. The search engines want relevant content. If you provide for these two needs, then you will be more successful. Taking shortcuts, like buying PLR articles, having software that rewrites other people’s content, or hiring article writers for $5 per article, means you will not be successful and you will just waste both your time and your money. Worse you will likely damage your reputation rather than build it up.

Bottom line: Quality = Success. Poor Quality = Failure.

Article Marketing And Social Bookmarking

Is social bookmarking part of article marketing? Absolutely! When you write an article to submit to article directories, you can go to each article directory, pull up the link to your article there, then submit it to Digg, Delicious, StumbleUpon, Propeller.com, or any of the other social bookmarking sites.

The cool thing is that you are using different urls each time.

You take the article in directory A and digg it.

Take the article at Directory B and tag it at Delicious.

Take the article in directory C and stmble it.

You get the idea. Now where were those articles?

Author Bio Linking Strategy

By admin on November 18th, 2007

Are you always linking to your main page when you put your author bio into your articles? If so, you should consider linking to other webpages within your website.

Many people only link to their domain name, their main index page when linking from articles they distribute on the web. Something to remember; “Search Engines Crawl Webpages, Not Websites.”

Every page in your website has a chance to get page rank and rank well in the search engines, but in order to do so, each page needs link popularity, not just your main page or your domain name.

Hope some of you find that helpful.

Are Links Within Articles Acceptable?

By allen on November 9th, 2007

One of the most controversial aspects of article marketing involves the placement of links within articles. Some article directories strictly forbid links within your articles. Others are a little bit more liberal regarding links within articles. Generally, most article directory managers, even if they allow articles within articles, encourage you to put your self-promoting links in your author resource box instead. I’d have to say that, from a practical perspective, the author resource box is the best place for your self-promoting links.

While this is true of self-promoting links, I think it’s OK to put other links within your articles if they add value for the reader. For instance, promoting third-party sources, links to books that you review, and other similar linking practices are encouraged. EzineArticles has one of the strictest link policies of any article directory that I know, but I have had links within articles accepted there simply because the links did not point to any website that I own. I reserved those links for my author resource box.

It is best to examine the policies of any article directory that you submit articles to so that you can judge the value of submitting your articles there. That is true of any article marketing practice, not just links. But if you understand the policies of the directory before you start submitting articles there then you can save yourself time by not submitting articles to fit a certain prohibition of a particular directory. For instance, while I will submit articles within third-party links within an article to EzineArticles.com, I know that EA is very strict regarding criticism of third parties. They rejected an article I wrote that suggested the New York Times should educate its employees and contractors on the what constitutes content theft and what doesn’t even though the article contained no defamatory or otherwise illegal content. Other directories, however, did publish the article.

Bottom line, when it comes to links within your articles, do it if it makes sense, but be sure you understand the policies of every directory you intend to submit those articles to so that you don’t waste time submitting them to article directories that will reject them.

Article Marketing: Traffic vs. PageRank

By allen on November 6th, 2007
Posted in Article Marketing | No Comments »

One obvious question that may pop up from some marketers not familiar with article marketing is, “Should I do it for the traffic or for the PageRank?” My answer to that question is the proverbial, “It depends.” The key is to not get too shortsighted and it’s easy to do that when you focus on PageRank.

For example, there are some successful article directories now that people submit their articles to primarily as a way to gain PageRank. The idea is to submit to these directories because the directories themselves have high PageRank and the link in your article resource box will transfer the benefits of that PageRank to your website. That’s not really a good plan.

For one thing, if the article directory has a PageRank of 6 then one article is not going to transfer a PageRank 6 benefit to you. You will have to share that PR 6 with every article marketer submitting articles that article directory. One rule of thumb is, the higher the PR of the article directory then the more people will be submitting articles to them, which means you are sharing a PR 6 with more people as opposed to a PR 4 with fewer. You might actually be getting less benefit from that than submitting to a site with lower PR. The best way to make that strategy work is to submit a lot of articles so that you can aggregate the total benefits of article submission. Again, that is a shortsighted approach and it could backfire in a number of ways.

Some article directories are now including nofollow tags on all of their article pages. That means if you do submit your articles to those directories then you won’t get any PageRank benefit from the directory at all. But that doesn’t mean there is no benefit to be gained from those articles at all.

Why You Submit To Article Directories
The real reason you want to submit your articles to article directories is not so that you can benefit from the traffic or PageRank of the article directory. The idea is to have your articles published in e-zines, on websites, and blogs owned by someone in your niche who is not associated with the article directory.

For example, let’s say you own a nutrition supplement store. You write health articles. If another website owner in your niche reads your articles and likes them then they are likely to publish your articles on their website and in their e-zine. That results in a link back to your website from another website within your niche. That publication then will transfer the benefits that you want to your website and is the real reason you submit articles to directories.

OK, So Is Traffic Or PageRank The Real Benefit I’m Looking For?
The answer is both. You want more traffic to your website because traffic means more opportunities to sell your product. You want higher PageRank because higher PageRank means more trust with the search engines and that means more trust with your target audience. But how do you achieve high PageRank?

A higher PageRank is achieved by relevant sites linking back to yours. Sites within your niche are relevant. The links from those sites are high value links. The higher the PageRank of the site linking to yours, the more benefit you’ll get from the links from that site. It all boils down to reputation. Think about hundreds of those high value, relevant links pointing back to your website. That is the reason for article marketing. It’s a long-term strategy and shortsightedness the way that you approach it will only kill any benefits that you do get.

Article Repurposing

By allen on November 5th, 2007

Do you repurpose your articles? Here are five reasons why you should repurpose and recirculate those old articles of yours:

  1. You’ll find a new audience
  2. You can update your information to make it more current
  3. Rebuild links that have fallen out of favor due to search engine algorithm updates
  4. Your opinions on certain matters may have changed
  5. The language you used in the last article has changed and a new article would make the language - and the ideas - fresher

There are likely other reasons you may want to consider repurposing old articles. I do know it’s a great way to increase traffic and the SEO benefits to your website. Plus, you can rewrite an old article in less than it takes to research and write a new one. All you have to do is tweak a few things here and there and you’ve got a new article. But now that you’ve repurposed that old article, what can you do with it? A boat load. Consider:

  • Resubmit it to article directories
  • Post it to your blog
  • Publish it on your website
  • Exchange it with other website owners and publishers for articles they have written
  • Put it in your ezine
  • Submit it to article hubs that pay you for your content or share the revenue
  • Have it reprinted in industry journals and on industry or niche websites

Virtually anything you can do with a fresh article you can also do with a repurposed article. And it’s just as easy.
